This is the story of my dad, Maurice Nowak.
My dad was born in France in 1923 and was a teen when war broke out. He was in the Vichy Army but deserted because the Vichy collaborated with the Nazi. He did not want to collaborate with the Nazi. He joined the French Resistance, the Maquis. He was captured by the Gestapo and as a political prisoner shipped to Austria and into forced labor. He remained a political prisoner until the end of the war when released by the Allied Forces. When the French Forces left Austria to return to France, he went with them. Shortly after returning to France, he immigrated to Canada. In the photo my dad is the second from the right.
